Emojiself Pronouns

They’re exactly what they sound like. Emojiself pronouns—otherwise known as Peak MOGAI™—emerged in very late 2017 or the first days of 20181. Since then, there’s been a general uptick in their adoption, or at least, in proclamations of their validity.
Many of the pleas for emojiself pronoun validation are undoubtedly sent in by trolls (or, perhaps, people incredulous about the depths to which MOGAI sinks without self-reflection?). The fact that the requests are not only dignified with responses, but enthusiastically embraced by blogs offering such services ought to raise more than a few red flags for anyone with a modicum of common sense.

Emojiself Pronouns (According to MOGAI)

The following sections are taken from the most in-depth MOGAI description of Emoji pronouns.

INDEX

  • WHAT ARE EMOJI PRONOUNS?
  • Why they are used
  • How they are used
  • Pronunciation
  • What if I can not use them?
  • But pronouns aren’t gender/Kin isn’t gender!!
  • You’re making trans people look bad

WHY ARE PEOPLE USING EMOJI PRONOUNS?
There are a lot of reasons for this! Just like there are reasons for using other neopronouns, like nounself pronouns. Some people like the way they look, some people like the way they may sound in their head, some people feel they describe them/reflect their gender well, etc.

The thing with neopronouns is we are trying to make new pronouns that reflect how we feel/how we want our pronouns to be. This is true whether its ze/zim, bun/buns, or 🐾/ 🐾s.

HOW ARE THEY USED?
Pronouns themselves are supposed to be so you can reference someone without using their name. In this case, emojis would take the place of pronouns/names just like she/they/he/it/ze/etc.

Take, for example, 🐾. 🐾/ 🐾/ 🐾s/ 🐾 works just like she/her/hers/herself.

  • Where is 🐾? Did 🐾 bring 🐾 lunch, or buy it?

PRONUNCIATION
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

EMOJI PRONOUNS ARE MEANT TO BE TEXT-BASED. AS SUCH, THEY MAY NOT HAVE WORD ALTERNATIVES! WHICH MEANS PEOPLE WILL HAVE AUX [auxiliary] PRONOUNS FOR YOU TO USE! “BUT YOU CAN’T SAY THEM!” ISN’T FUCKING DISCOURSE WHEN THEY WERE NOT MEANT TO BE SAID IN THE FIRST PLACE! THESE PRONOUNS ARE MEANT TO BE FUN, AND ARE MEANT TO STAND AGAINST WHAT WE SEE AS ‘NORMAL’ AND ‘TYPICAL’ PRONOUNS.

However, they may have ways to be said! You can ask the person who uses them!

Example:

One person may use 🐾 pronouns, and they may be pronounced or have a word alternative like ‘paw’. That would mean their pronouns go like as follows:

  • Where is 🐾? Did 🐾 bring 🐾 lunch, or buy it?
  • Where is paw? Did paw bring paws lunch, or buy it?

BUT another person may use 🐾 only as an emoji, meaning they do not have a word alternative for it. They probably have aux pronouns to use though, so they would be like this:

  • Where is 🐾? Did 🐾 bring 🐾 lunch, or buy it?
  • Where is he? Did he bring his lunch, or buy it?

WHAT IF I CAN NOT USE THEM?
That’s totally fine! There are a lot of reasons people may not be able to use emoji pronouns, such as language or reading issues, memory issues, or the inability to get the emojis! All are fine!

DO WHAT YOU WOULD DO IN A NORMAL SITUATION, AND AS THEM FOR THEIR AUX PRONOUNS.

Most people I’ve seen don’t even use emoji pronouns as their mains, theyre for like, friends and chat groups and shit. This isn’t some “THEYRE TAKING OVER!!!” situation. It’s literally something some people have done because “it looks cool and fuck you”.

(This is also a PSA to people WITH emoji pronouns; please remember they can be hard for people to use, and aux pronouns are highly suggested!)

Alternatively, you can literally just leave people alone. You don’t need to know their pronouns if you don’t know them/aren’t interacting with them. It’s when you force yourself into those situations that everything goes to shit.

BUT PRONOUNS AREN’T GENDER/KIN ISN’T GENDER!!
You are correct! Pronouns and [[[wiki: otherkin |kintypes are not gender! However, they can have gendered feelings if that person feels they do.

Pronouns are not gender, but in society they are gendered. That means that if you use she/her, people are going to hear it with a woman/feminine connotation. This is why trans people don’t like it when people use the wrong pronouns, even if that pronoun isn’t a ‘gender’.

When it comes to kin it can be complicated; some people’s gender is influenced by their kintype, but that doesn’t make being otherkin a gender/make otherkin lgbt! We already know this. It’s mostly discoursers that want to make this an actual problem by misunderstanding and misreading the things we say.

For example, someone kin with deer may find their gender influenced by whether the deer was a buck or doe, some people may even feel their gender influenced by the forest or something like that. These people are nonbinary and use their kintypes to express this. It’s not “I’m otherkin, and that makes me trans/lgbt/etc!!” it’s “I’m trans/lgbt/etc and I’m also otherkin! Here’s how they are related sometimes!”

YOU’RE MAKING TRANS PEOPLE LOOK BAD
First of all, if you’re not trans, you don’t even get a say in this.

Second of all, transphobia exists because cis people exist. Not because trans people are embarrassing. If you are a cis person saying “this is why trans people are a joke” that isn’t some fucking tea, you’re just transphobic. And if you’re trans, just take a little bit of time to read through other people’s experiences and shit. Think critically about the groups you are supporting. We shouldn’t be enemies here.

The bottom line, though, is that it’s still fucking invasive to require everyone at any time to give you their definition/reasoning of their gender just because you can’t relate to them or something.
Move the fuck on. And if you don’t like someone/don’t like seeing someone? Block them.2

Examples of Emojiself Pronouns

Given the ease of creating these linguistic travesties, there is no way to collect all of them. However, theses are a decent overview of emoji pronouns taken as legitimate by non-troll MOGAI blogs.
